About Mason Chock

Born and raised on Kauaʻi, I am a community servant with only love in my heart for Kauai and its people.  I have no self-serving agenda, only an interest for leadership in action and an inclusive process that brings people together for shared solutions rather than be divided through divisive motivations.

Mahalo for Your Kokua!

I was initially against running a campaign because I have been disenfranchised by how, in the past, political candidates have leveraged $$$ to run a popularity campaign. However, there is always a silver lining of opportunity in situations that seem to have huge obstacles. Instead, I hope to model integrity by illustrating that  setting campaign limits, no one can own our leaders, and that instead of talking and sign waving, campaigns can serve as a vehicle to get some solid work done in our community.  If you would like to donate to my campaign, please limit your donation to no more than $100 maximum, but please feel free to encourage the world to contribute a small amount as well.

Me Ka Ha'aha'a,
Mason Chock & Na Kua 'Aina O Kaua'i

Ho'i I Ka Piko.  Return to the Source.
Balance and Responsibility
by All for Kaua'i.

I have dedicated my life to community service since returning to Kauai after graduating from Kamehameha and UH Manoa in 1995.  I first began my service on Kauai as a firefighter and spent 12 years in that position as a rescue specialist until my rescue helicopter crashed while on duty ending my career.  While in the county I began expanding my service into the community.  I participated along with a few Kamehameha classmates in the development of Kanu I Ka Pono Charter School and The Waipā Foundation.  In those first few years home I worked in Hawaiian enrichment programming and became the Executive Director of The Native Hawaiian Education Association.  In 1999 a few of our friends and firemen came together to build a challenge ropes course at Waipā and thus we began our company, Kauai Team Challenge.  Our focus began in experiential learning and team building including mentoring for at risk youth.  This led to leadership development and involvement with Leadership Kauai of which I went on to become a program director and later the executive director for 5 ½ years.  Since Leadership Kauai, I’ve expanded our company to do business as Kupu A’e, a literal meaning of “to grow and unfold”.  Our focus is on leadership development for socio-economic change and positive growth focused on education, business and government.  Today, I am one of forty certified master facilitators of The Leadership Challenge in the world.  I believe fostering leadership behaviors in our government will have a huge impact on our island’s success in dealing with our issues and needs.  My work at the County Council is my service to government.  No matter what capacity or context or regardless of what role I’m in, I will continue to contribute in service by modeling, facilitating and fostering a foundation of sound leadership in our government agencies and within our process.   I believe we will only progress and move towards success when we are very clear about what is most important and can stand for our deepest values while also working collaboratively towards agreement on how to perpetuate these values.  My reason for why I’m running for council is very simple and probably very different from others.  I have a vision of our island serving as an example to the rest of the world on how to collectively achieve our desired lifestyle while living in balance with our environment and each other through leadership development.  We will be the example of leading positive change in the world.

After this last 6 months of working onboard the county council, I see where the opportunities to make cultural shifts in how we do business can occur.  I want a chance to work on positively affecting our system, but I will need more time and trust to do so.  In short, I have been a servant to our island and to our people for close to 20 years.  The work I do will occur internally as a council member or externally, but it will continue.  However, from this position, I will have an opportunity to take specific action in building the infrastructure of effective leadership and thus affect a culture shift in our county government.
